People in the UK see a new-build, detached property in the country as their 'ideal' home, new research has found.
The survey, by Halifax mortgages, found that 50 per cent of people would prefer a detached property.
Some 22 per cent also said they preferred newly-built houses - and around one-third of those questioned said they would like to live in the countryside.
Phil Jenks, head of mortgages at Halifax, said: "Although many of us live in towns or cities, there is no disputing that a house in the country is what the majority of us aspire to.
"The preference for new-build detached properties shows that people want their home to be personal to them and that space and privacy is also important."
According to the research, the typical ideal British home would include three bedrooms, a fitted kitchen and a playroom.
Additional desirable features cited were off-street parking, a home security system and a conservatory.
