Americas politicians fight illegal logging

A bipartisan group of American politicians is pushing for a crackdown on illegal timber harvesting across the globe.
A Senate measure was introduced this week aimed at low-priced wooden products, logged from illegal sources and then imported to the US at prices far below those of US manufacturers.
Several commercial and environmental groups showed support for the bill, including Greenpeace, the US Hardwood Federation and the American Forest and Paper Association.
Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, who introduced the bill, emphasised that such action would have both economic and environmental benefits.
By curbing illegal logging in regions such as the Amazon, Indonesia, the Congo Basin and Siberia, he said, the bill should help "preserve and protect ecosystems that are being destroyed by this devastating practice".
The bill should also go some way towards protecting the US timber industry.
According to abcmoney.co.uk, some 70 per cent of North America's hardwood plywood, including oak, maple, birch and cherry, is currently manufactured by Oregon-based companies.
